Young Engineers of Today's mission is to help create the next generation of engineers and programmers. We offer a variety engineering enrichment classes for young people of all levels where students become technology creators, not just consumers.

Minecraft and Rasberry Pi (New Camp!!! Just Added 5/6/2014)
Grade Level: 4 - 8
Date/Times: July 7 - 11, 2014 / 9:00 am - 4:00 pm
Location: North Carolina State University
Cost: $450

What happens when you take the wonderful world of Minecraft and combine it with the hottest microcomputer in the world? Amazing things happen! Prepare to dive head first into the innovative part-programming, part-engineering world of mechatronics using Minecraft and Raspberry Pi*. Campers will learn the fundamentals of programming by modifying Minecraft using Python. Instead of simply playing a computer game they are coding their own Minecraft world. Campers will also spend time away from the computer screen doing robotics as they build their very own, physical Minecraft compass that responds to player movements in the virtual world. In addition to programming and engineering skills, each camper will take home their very own Raspberry Pi computer and custom, self-built Minecraft Compass.  Later, students will be able to participate in free, live webinars to reinforce what they learn in camp.

*Raspberry Pi  is a credit-card sized computer that plugs into your TV and a keyboard. It’s a capable little PC which can be used for many of the things that your desktop PC does, such as creating spreadsheets, word-processing, and playing games. It also plays high-definition video. This tiny and inexpensive computer was developed to teach kids programming, physical computing, and robotics.  While very popular in the world today, Charlotte Latin was the first school in the US to “serve” its students the Raspberry Pi.

Quadcopters, LED Rockets and Drones
Grade Level: 6 - 8
Date/Times: July 14-18, 2014 / 9:00 am - 12:00 pm
Location: North Carolina State University
Cost: $225

Looking for a break from paper airplanes and foam gliders? Welcome to the Flight Camp of the 21st century. From quadcopters to aerial drones, we use the latest technology to explore all things flight using the old-school method of learning by doing. Does your camper want to know how to pilot the newest aircraft? Campers will be given their very own quadcopter, model airplane, and rockets to fly as they learn engineering and physics principles. Along with developing their own skills to build model airplanes and rockets, this program gives campers the confidence to continue embracing new, innovative technology in this fast-paced field.

Beyond LEGOs – Advanced Robotics
Grade Level: 6 - 8
Date/Times: July 14-18, 2014 / 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Location: North Carolina State University
Cost: $225

Building your very own robot using Arduino technology. Campers will build and keep their very own robot. This is not just a camp where they will be assembling a kit: this is an in depth exploration of electronics, microcontrollers, and programming. They will have an opportunity to construct and design several different robotic projects to gain the experience they need to make their own robots from scratch.

Cyborgs vs. Robots
Grade Level: 6 - 8
Date/Times: July 21-25, 2014 / 9:00 am - 12:00 pm
Location: North Carolina State University
Cost: $225

Explore the newest tech with bioengineering. As scientists and doctors add electronics to living organisms, engineers are perfecting robots to be more and more like living creatures. Campers will examine these trends in bioengineering by creating living cyborgs and building robotic serpents with life-like features. They will also build a robotic hand that they will control with the motor neurons in their arms. This is truly a one-of-a-kind camp where your children will immerse themselves at the pulse of the tech future, learning biology, neurology, computing and programming through hands-on projects.

3D Printing & Rasberry Pi
Grade Level: 6 - 8
Date/Times: July 21-25, 2014 / 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Location: North Carolina State University
Cost: $225

Taken right out of the future, 3D Printing is the process of making three-dimensional solid objects from a digital object. It almost seems like a magical process. Your camper will use a 3D Printer to have their own 3D designs made with a computer software come to life. Campers will also be given a Raspberry Pi computer. This tiny computer was developed to teach kids programming and physical computing including robotics. We all learn best by doing, and this computer lets campers experiment and tinker without putting your expensive family computer at risk. Come explore with us!

Reviews/Testimonials

  • "This is hands down the best thing we have done for Nikko since we began homeschooling. We are all thrilled with Young Engineers.  An even bigger thanks for your enthusiasm and passion for teaching engineering.  Nikko has always  been extremely interested in Science and Technology, but now it’s like a fire has been lit inside of him.  I can’t tell you how exciting this is for me"!  - Sheila
  • "Robbie does all his homework, watches the videos, uses software you send and answers all the questions.  He loves your class.  I have never homechooled a child before and it really is a great thing for Robbie to have this opportunity." – Meredith
  • "To say Teddy is loving the course would be an understatement…. His brother can’t wait until he can do it too." – Tamara
  • "Thank you for all you are doing to stimulate Kamryn’s interests and connect her math knowledge to the real world.  I have not seen her so interested in anything since her first set of legos several years ago!" -  Angie
